THE NRSIMHA KAVACA 

 

1.      Sri Narad uvaca,  

 

 indradi deva vrindesha 

 tateshvara jagat pate
   mahavisnor nrsimhasya 

    kavacam bruhi me prabho
        yasya prapathanad vidvan 

    trilokya vijayi bhavet

 

"Sri Narad Muni said: O master of Indra and the demigods, O master of the universe, O dear father, please tell me the kavaca of Lord Visnu-Nrsimha. By reciting that kavaca a wise man conquers the three worlds."

 

2.      sri brahmovaca,   

 

  shrnu narada vakshyami 

     putra-shreshtha tapo-dhana
     kavacam narasimhasya 

    trailok-ya vijayabhidam

 

"Sri Brahma said: O Narada wealthy in austerity, O best of my sons, please listen and I will tell you the Nrsimha-kavaca called Trailokya-vijaya (the conquest of the three worlds)."

 

3.      yasya prapathanad vagmi 

  trailokya-vi jayi bhavet
       srashtham jagatam vatsa 

     pathanad dharanad yatah

 

"By reciting this prayer, one becomes eloquent. One becomes a coqueror of the three worlds. My son, I became the creator of this universe because I recited this kavaca and wore it in an amulet." 

 

4.      laksmir jagat-trayam pati 

 samharta ca maheshvarah
       pathanad dhanarad deva 

     babhuvush ca dig ishvarah

 

"By reciting this prayer and wearing it in an amulet Goddess Laksmi became the protector of the three worlds, Lord Siva became the destroyer, and the demigods became the masters of the directions." 

 

5.      brahma-mantra-myam vakshye 

 bhutadi-vinivarakam
        yasya prasadad durvasas 

    trailokya-vi jayi munih
        pathanad dharanad yasya 

    shasta ca krodha-bhairavah

 

"Now I will speak this kavaca, which contains within it all the mantras of the Vedas. By the mercy of this kavaca Durvasa Muni conquered the three worlds. By reciting this prayer and wearing it in an amulet He became able to punish others, he became feared for his anger." 

 

6.    trailokya-vi jayasyasa 

kavacasya prajapatih
         rishis chandash ca gayatri

     nrsimho devata vibhuh

 

"The sage of this kavaca is Prajapati Brahma. The meter is Gayatri. The Deity is Lord Nrsimha, the all-powerful Personality of Godhead."

 

7+ 8     kshraum bijam me shirah patu

      candra-varno maha-manuh
         ugram viram maha-visnum 

      jvalantam sarvato-mukham


          nrsimham bhishanam bhadram 

        mrtyu-mrtyum namamy aham
          dva trimsad aksharo mantro 

    mantra rajah sura drumah

 

"Kshraum. May this great mantra, its syllables glittering like a string of moons, protect my head." 

 

I bow down before all-powerful, frightening, auspicious, sublimely ferocious Lord Nrsimha, who is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Visnu, who burns like fire, whose faces are everywhere, and who is the death of death.

 

This 32 syllable prayer is the king of mantras, the sura-druma tree of mantras."

 

9.      kantham patu dhruvam kshraum hrd

   bhagavate cakshushi mama
         narasimhaya ca jvala maline 

    patu mastakam

 

"May the word "kshraum" protect my neck. May the word "bhagavate" (to the Supreme Personality of Godhead) protect my heart. May the word "narasimhaya" (to Lord Nrsimha) protect my eyes. May the word "jvala-maline" (who wears a garland of flames) protect my head."

 

10.     dipta-damshtraya ca tatha- 

   agni netraya ca nasikam
         sarva-raksho-ghnaya sarva-

  bhuta-vinashanaya ca

 

"May the words "dipta-damshtraya" (whose teeth glisten), "agni-netraya" (whose eyes are fierce), and "sarva-bhuta-vinashanaya" (the killer of all ghosts) protect my nose." 

 

11.     sarva-jvara-vinasaya 

     daha daha pacha-dvayam
         raksha raksha sarva-mantra 

        svaha patu mukham mama

 

"May the words "sarva-jvara-vinasya"  (the protector from all fevers), "daha daha" (burn! burn!) "paca paca" (brun! burn!) "raksa raksa" (protect! protect!) "svaha" and the entire mantra protect my face."

 

Note: The mantra here is: 

 

kshraum bhagavate narasimhaya jvala-maline dipta-damshtraya

agni-netrya  sarva-raksho-ghanaya sarva-bhuta-vinashanaya

sarva-jvara-vinashaya daha daha pacha pacha raksha raksha svaha

 

 

"I bow down before Lord Nrsimha, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Who wears a garland of flames, Whose teeth glisten, Whose eyes are fires, Who is the killer of all rakshasas and ghosts, and Who is the protector from all fevers. O Lord Nrsimha, please burn my enemies! Burn them! Burn them! Burn them! Protect me! Protect me! Svaha."

 

 

12.     taradi ramacandraya 

 namah payad gudam mama
         klim payat pani-yugmam ca 

taram namah padam tatah
         narayanaya parshvam ca 

       am hrim kraum kshraum ca hum phat

 

"Om Namo Ramacandraya (Obeisances to Lord Ramacandra). May Lord Ramacandra protect my private parts. May Lord Ramacandra protect my hands. Om Namo Narayana. (Obeisances to Lord Narayana). May Lord Narayana protect my feet. May Lord Narayana protect my sides. Am hrim kraum kstrum ca hum phat!"

 

 

13.     varaksharah katim patu 

     om namah bhagavate padam
   vasudevaya ca prishtham 

   klim krsnaya uru-dvaram

 

"Om Namo Bhagavate (Obeisances to the Supreme Personality of Godhead). May Lord Bhagavan protect my feet. May Lord Bhagavan protect my waist and hips. Om Namo Vasudevaya (Obeisances to Lord Vasudeva). May Lord Vasudeva protect my back. Klim Krsnaya (Obeisances to Lord Krishna). May Lord Krishna protect my thighs."

 

14.     klim krsnaya sada patu 

        januni ca manuttamah
           klim glaum klim shyamalangaya 

         namah payat pada-dvaram

 

"Klim Krsnaya (Obeisances to Lord Krishna). May Lord Krishna always protect my knees. This is the best of mantras. Klim Glaum Klim Symalangaya Namaha (Obeisances to dark-limbed Lord Krishna). May Lord Krishna protect my feet."

 

15.     kshraum narasimhaya ksraum ca 

  sarvangam me sadavatu

 

"Kshraum Narasimhaya Kshraum. (Obeisances to Lord Nrsimha). May Lord Nrsimha always protect all the limbs and parts of my body."

 

16.    iti te kathitam vatsa 

    sarva-mantraugha-vigraham
        tava snehan mayakhyatam 

     pravaktavyam na kasyacit

 

"My child, I have thus spoken to you the personification of all mantras. Out of affection I told to you, but it should not be repeated to anyone."

 

 

17.     guru-pujam vidhayatha 

       grhniyat kavacam tatah
         sarva-punya-yuto bhutva 

        sarva-siddhi-yuto bhavet

 

"After worshiping his spiritual master, one should accept this kavaca. Then one attains all piety. Then one attains all perfection."

 

18.     shatam ashtottaram caiva 

        purashcharya vidhih smritah
      havanadin dashamsena

       krtva sadhaka-sattamah

 

"Performing purashcarya and yajnas one hundred  and eight times is equal to one tenth the merit attained by chanting this kavaca."

 

19.     tatas tu siddha-kavacah 

  punyatma madanopaman
         sparddham uddhuya bhavane 

       lakshmir vani vaset tatah

 

"One who properly chants this kavaca becomes saintly. Forgetting their natural rivalry, Laksmi and Sarasvati both reside in his home." 

 

20.     pushpanjaly-ashtakam dattva 

     mulenaiva pathet sakrit

      api varsha sahasranam 

       pujayah phalam apnuyat

 

"Offering eight palmsful of flowers and only once chanting this mula-mantra, one attains the result of a thousand years of worship."

 

21.     bhur je vilkhya gutikam 

         svarna-stham dharayed yadi
         kanthe va dakshine bahau 

        narasimho bhavet svayam

 

"If one write this mantra on birch and wears it in an amulet around one's neck or on one's right arm, then Lord Nrsimha will personally accompany Him." 

 

22.     yoshid vama-bhuje caiva 

      puruso dakshine kare
         vibhriyat kavacam punyam 

       sarva-siddhi-yuto bhavet

 

"A woman should wear this amulet on her left arm. A man should wear it on his right hand. Whoever wears this sacred amulet attains all perfection."

 

23.     kaka vandhya ca ya nari 

          mrita-vatsa ca ya bhavet
              janma-vandhya nashta-putra 

           bahu-putravati bhavet

 

"By wearing this amulet a woman who is barren, who has only one child, whose children have died, or whose children are lost will become the mother of many good children."

 

24.     kavacasya prasadena 

        jivan-mukto bhaven narah
           trilokyam kshobhayaty eva 

         trailokya-vijayi bhavet

 

"By the mercy of this kavaca one becomes liberated even while living in this world. One shakes the three worlds. One conquers the three worlds."

 

25.     bhuta-preta-pishacash ca 

         rakshasa danavash ca ye
        tam drshtva prapalayante 

       deshad deshantaram dhruvam

 

"The moment they see Him, bhutas, pretas, pishacas, raksasas, and danavas flee far away. They run to another country."

 

26.     yasmin gehe ca kavacam 

    grame va yadi tishthati
         tam desham tu parityajya 

      prayanti cati-durantah

 

"These evil spirits flee far away from any home or village where this kavaca is placed."

 


Thus ends the Sri Nrsimha kavaca, of the Trailokya vijay in the samhita of Brahma

nrisinha-kavacham vakshye
prahlaadenoditam puraa 

sarva-raksha-karam punyam
sarvopadrava-naashanamah

 

sarva sampat karam chaiva
svaraga moksha pradaayakamah 

dhyaatvaa nrisinham devesham
hema sinhaasana sthitamah

 

Now I will speak the sacred armor of Lord Nrsimha, which Prahlad Maharaja spoke in ancient times, and which gives all protection, destroys all obstacles, and brings good fortune, opulence, and liberation. First one should meditate on Lord Nrsimha, the master of the demigods, who is sitting on a golden throne,....

 

3) vivrtasyam tri-nayanam
sharad-indu-sama-prabhamah 

lakshmy-alingita-vaamaanagamah 
vibhuutibhi rupashritamah 

 

 ...whose mouth is wide open, who has three eyes, who is splendid like an autumn moon, whose left side is embraced by the goddess of fortune, whose form is the shelter of great powers and opulences......

 

4) chatur-bhujam komalaanagam
svarna-kundala-shobhitamah 

saroja-shobitoraskam
ratna-keyuura-mudritamah 

 

...who has four arms, and soft limbs, splendid golden earrings, a splendid lotus chest, jewel armlets....

 

5) tapta-kaajnchana-sankasham
piita-nirmala-vaasasamah 

indraadi-sura-maulishhthah
sphuran maanikya-diiptibhih 

 

....who is slpendid like molten gold, dressed in splendid yellow garments, and glorious with the splendor of rubies, who is the crown of the demigods headed by Indra..... 

 

6) virajita-pada-dvandvamah
sankha-chakradi-hetibhih 

garutmatma cha vinayat
stuyamanamh mudanvitam 

 

...whose feet are splendid, who holds a conchshell, cakra, and a hoset of various weapons, who is filled with bliss, and whom Gaurda humbly glorifies with many prayers...........

 

7) sva-hrt-kamala-samvaasam
kritvaa tu kavacham pathet

 

....then one should give Lord Nrsimha a home in the lotus flower of ones heart, and then one should recite the following Nrsimha-kavaca:

 

Having seated Lord Narasimhadeva upon the lotus of one's heart, one should recite the following mantra:

 

nrsimho me sirah patu

loka-raksartha-sambhavah

 

May Lord Narasimha, who protects the entire world, protect my head.

 

8) sarvago 'pi stambha-vaasah
phalam me rakshatu dhvanim

nrisinho me drishau paatu
soma-suuryagni-lochanah 

 

May Lord Nrsimha, who is all-pervading and stays even in a pillar, protect the fruits of my words.May Lord Nrsimha, whose eyes glisten like moons, suns, or fires, protect my eyes.

 

9) smrtam me paatu nriharih
muni-varya-stuti-priyah 

nasam me simha-nashas tu
mukham lakshmi-mukha-priyah 

 

May Lord Nrsimha, who is pleased with the eloquent prayers of the sages, protect my memory. May Lord Nrsimha, who dearly loves the goddess of fortune's face, protect my face.

 

10) sarva-vidyadhipah paatu
nrisinho rasanam mama 

vaktram patv indu-vadanam
sadaa prahlada-vanditah 

 

May Lord Nrsimha, the ruler of all knowledge, protect my tongue. May Lord Nrsimha, to whom Prahlada offers obeisances, protect the moon of my face.

 

11) nrsimhah paatu me kantham
skandhau bhu-bhrid ananta-krit

divyastra-shobhita-bhujah
nrsimhah paatu me bhu jau 

 

May Lord Nrsmha protect my neck. May Lord Nrsimha, who maintains the earth and whose powers have no end, protect my shoulders. May Lord Nrsimha ,whose arms are splendid with transcendental weapons, protect my arms. 

 

12) karu me deva-varado
nrisimhah patu sarvatah

hridayam yogi-saadhyash ca
nivasam patu me harih 

 

May Lord Nrsimha,  who gives boons to the demigods, protect my hands. May Lord Hari, who is attained by the yogis, protect my heart and my home. 

 

13) madhyam paatu hiranyaksha
vakshah-kukshi-vidaranah

nabhim me patu nriharih
sva-naabhi-brahma-samstutah

 

May Lord Nrsimha, who ripped open Hiranyakasipu's chest and belly, protect my torso. May Lord Nrsimha, who is glorified by Brahma born from the Lord own navel, protect my navel.

 

14) brahmananda-kotayah katyam
yasyasau patu me katimah

guhyam me patu guhyanam
mantranam guhya-rupa-dhrik 

 

May Lord Nrsimha, from whose hips have come many millions of universes, protect my hips. May the Lord, the secret form of secret mantras, protect my private parts. 

 

15) uru manobhavah paatu
januni nara-ruupa-dhrik

janghe patu dhara-bhara
harta yo 'sau nrikeshari

 

May Lord Nrsimha, who is born in the heart, protect my thighs. May lord Nrsimha whose form is like that of a human being, protect my knees. May Lord Nrsimha, who removes the earth's burden, protect my legs.

 

16) sura-raajya-pradah paatu
padau me nrihariishvarah

sahasra-shirsah purushah
patu me sarvashas tanum

 

May Lord Nrsimha, who gives royal power to the demigods, protect my feet. May the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who has a thousand heads, protect my body always.

 

17) mahograh purvatah patu
maha-viragrajo 'gnitah

maha-vishnur dakshine tu
maha-jvalas tu nairritah

 

May ferocious Lord Nrsimha protect me from the east. May Lord Nrsimha, the best of warriors, protect me from the southeast. May Lord Nrsimha, who is Maha Vishnu, protect me from the south. May Lord Nrsimha, who is splendid like fire, protect me from the southwest.

 

18) pashcime paatu sarvesho
dishi me sarvato-mukhah 

nrsimhaha patu vayavyam
saumyam bhushana-vigrahah

 

May all-pervading Lord Nrsimha protect me from the west. May Lord Nrsimha protect me from the northwest. May Lord Nrsimha, whose form is the ornament of ornaments, protect me from the north.

 

19) ishanyam paatu bhadro me
sarva-mangala-dayakah

samsara-bhayatah paatu
mrityor mrityur nrikeshari

 

May noble-hearted Lord Nrsimha, who gives all-auspiciousness, protect from the northwest. May Lord Nrsimha, who is the death of death, protect me from the cycle of birth and death.

 

20) idam nrismha-kavacham
prahla-mukha-manditam

bhaktimanh yah pathen nityam
sarva-papaih pramuchyate

 

A devotee who regularly chants this Narasimha-kavacha, which bears the mouth of  Prahlaada Mahaaraaja as its ornament, becomes free from all sins.

 

21) putravan dhanavan loke
dirghayur upajayate

kamayate yam yam kamam
tam tam prapnoty asamshayam

 

He has good children. He becomes wealthy. He lives for a long time in thi world. Whatever he desires he attains. Of this there is no doubt.

 

22) sarvatra jayam apnoti
sarvatra vijayi bhavet

bhumy-antariksha-divyanam
grahanam vinivaranam

 

Everywhere he attains victory. Everywhere he is victorious. He is protected from earthly, celestial, and intermediate inauspicious planets.

 

23)  vrishchikoraga-sambhuta
vishapaharanam param

brahma-rakshasaya-kshanam
durotsarana-karanam

 

The poison of snakes and scorpions is removed. Yakshas and brahma-rakshas are thrown far away.

 

24) bhu je va tala patre va
kavacham likhitam shubham

kara-mule dhritam yena
sidhyeyuh karma-siddhayah 

 

A person who writes this auspicious kavaca on his arm, or on a palm-leaf that he then wears on his wrist, attains all perfection in all he does.

 

25) devasure-manushyeshu
svam svameva jayam labhet

eka-sandhyam tri-sandhyam va
yah pathe niyato narah

 

A person who daily recites this kavaca at sunrise, noon and sunset, or at only one of those three times, becomes victorious over humans, demons, and demigods.

 

26) sarva-mangala-mangalyam
bhuktim muktim ca vindati 

dva-trimshati-sahasrani
patheth shuddhatmanam nrinam

 

A person who recites this kavaca 32,000 times attains the happiness, liberation, and supreme auspiciousness available to they who are pure in heart. 

 

27 & 28) kavachasyasya mantrasya
mantra-siddhih prajayate

anena mantra-ra jena
kritva bhasmabhir mantranaam

 

tilakam vinyased yas tu
tasya graha-bhayam haret

tri-varam japamanas tu
dattam vary abhimantrya

 

This Kavacha-mantra brings the perfection of all mantras. One who wears tilaka of the sacred ashes of this mantra, sips acamana, and chants this mantra three times, no longer fears inauspicoius planets.

 

30) prashayed yo naro mantram
nrisimha-dhyanam acharet

tasya rogah pranashyanti
ye ca syuh kukshi-sambhavah

 

A persons abdominal disease are at once destroyed when he chants this mantra and meditates on Lord Nrsimha.

 

31) garjantam garjayantam nijabhujapatalam sphotayantam hatantam
rupyantam tapayantam divi bhuvi ditijam kshepayantam kshipantamah 

 

krandantam roshhayantam dishi dishi satatam sanharantam bharantam
viikshantam puurnayantam karanikarashatairdivyasinham namami 

 

Lord Narasimha roars loudly and causes others to roar. With His multitudes of arms He tears the demons asunder and kills them in this way. He is always seeking out and tormenting the demonic descendants  of Diti, both on this earth planet and in the higher planets, and Hs throws them down and scatters them. He cries with great anger as He destroys the demons in all directions, yet with His unlimited hands He sustains, protects, and nourishes the cosmic manifestation. I offer my respectful obeisances to the Lord, who has assumed the form of a transcendental lion.

 

iti shri-brahmanda-purane prahlaadoktam
shri nrisimha kavacham sampurnamah

 

Thus ends the Narasimha-kavacha
as it is described by Prahlada Maharaja in the Brahmanda Purana.
